Orange is the New Fit

Happy 2017! Welcome back to the first post of Trex to Tigress of the new year.

I started my week after the New Year with a week of HIIT conditioning. This type of intense circuit work segued perfectly into my very first session with Orangetheory Fitness. I have seen OT Fitness circulating around the world of fitness through social media via other bloggers, as well as Instagram. What looked like a functional training boot camp type of training, I was curious to know what the colour orange had to do with anything? When I discovered there was now an OT fitness studio not only in Canada, but one not too far from home, I reached out to try a demo class and attended a session this morning.


Heading out before sunrise (which is a miracle in itself as many of you may know I am NOT a morning person) I made it for the early morning orientation and then gave the class a try. Upon entering the airy, bright, state of the art studio, the first thing I asked welcoming instructor Rachel was, “why orange theory?

Rachel introduced me to the Orangetheory guide-book and noted creator Ellen Latham, who uses the scientific-based research of heart rate interval based training. The findings behind Ellen Latham’s research are based on heart rate zones; grey being very light activity and red being the most intense exertion. Orange is the ideal zone to train in and the perfect point of exertion, specifically 12-20 minutes in this zone during the workout. The other zones do have their place during the workout, such as the strength and the cool down portion.Β  The orange zone creates excess post oxygen, which is proven to speed up metabolism post workout, thus continuing to burn calories even after finishing the workout. Each participant is given a heart rate monitor to ensure you are staying in the correct zones.


I found the hour-long workout pretty grueling. Kudos to anyone who does this class on a regular basis.Β  Three blocks of treadmill work, rowing and medicine ball jacks were completed before moving to the floor work for another three blocks focusing on strength. The floor work consisted of TRX work, bosu ball core work and push-ups and lastly a deep stretch. During this time our heart rates began to slow down to the green, blue and grey zones. It was a challenge as I said, but a lot of fun and I really enjoyed myself. Energetic coach Alexis lead the class, and demonstrated modified versions of all exercises before we started to suit all levels.

Benefits of OT Fitness:

  • Perfect for the science enthusiast, who enjoys marking progress via technology. Your name is on a big screen and readings are based off of your heart rate monitor.
  • A small class size, and closer attention from coach to ensure proper form and safety.
  • OT Fitness is a very group friendly facility. If you are the lone wolf type when working out, this may not be the class for you. Participants from beginner to advanced levels are all very supportive of each other.
  • Increased energy and continued calories burned post workout.
  • Although progress is monitored based on your monitor, there is no leader board if you are not keen on the competitive side. The coach counts down the beginning and the end, and everyone finishes together. The goal is to finish all exercises within blocks during allotted time. I did not, so this would definitely be a goal for me if I was to return.
  • Breakdown of your zones after workout is available to note where improvements can be made.
  • On site nutrition-coaching, weight loss and fitness challenges are offered to members who are interested.
  • Not a one-size fits all yearly membership, as with most of the big box gyms. Various packages are available to suit every budget. Contact your local OT Fitness for more details on packages and pricing.
  • Various session times to suit schedule needs.
  • Modern, clean and state of the art equipment.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Rachel, Alexia and all the OT staff for the warm welcome and awesome workout. I would highly recommend this facility to a seasoned fitness lover who is plateauing, or someone who is new to fitness and looking for a start on their wellness journey.

  1. We have a lot of these around here. I know people that love & not love it..It really does look like a great workout & especially for people that like a group atmosphere & different stuff & variety! me – I like my own thing – as alone as I can be πŸ™‚

    1. It is a community feel for sure. I wasn’t sure how I would like it because I do my workout and go home without much socializing (except for group classes.) I will return for another class during March break. I enjoyed the challenge and the staff were 100%.

      1. It’s sound like fun! Was there emphasis on maintaining good form over beating the clock? If it comes to Spain I’ll check it out!

  3. The OT class I’ve taken in Texas has a board, however you are correct the day it is displayed is NOT in leaderboard fashion. Personally I am a tad competitive (shocker) so I do like leaderboards in classes at times but I think it’s important to have the whole you vs. you concept. Orangetheory is awesome and I enjoy the high intensity aspect for sure! Glad you liked it too πŸ™‚

    1. I really had fun. I’m a bit of a lone wolf in the gym, (except when I go to group classes) so it was nice to connect with other fitness lovers.
      I hate coming in last in a leaderboard! Lol. Although I have to remember I am my biggest competition.

  4. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Orangetheory! They remind me a lot of my gym, F45. It’s kind of a similar HIIT Bootcamp style training and I looooooove it! I know there are some F45’s in the Toronto area. You should check one out. I’d be curious to see what you thought!
