Stress. We all experience it from time to time, some more than others. The demands of life make it impossible to never face challenging times. Stress exists, but how do you cope with it? If not handling stress with proper coping mechanisms, it can be harmful to the body, soul and mind. I have personally witnessed stress cause hives, influenza and immune breakdown, hair loss and acne, to far more severe repercussions, such as depression, mental breakdown and heart attacks. In today’s fast paced society, we must learn to slow down and keep stress levels at bay to lead healthier and happier lives. I am not just writing this post because it’s Stress Awareness Month and it seems appropriate, I have suffered from anxiety-ridden stress and have suffered from at least two of the related symptoms above, so I know the harm caused from not handling stress well and how debilitating it can be. During a certain “time of the month”, I find my stress levels heighten, and things that would not normally bother me, tend to get me worked up.
These days, I try to remember to stop and smell the roses, take deep breaths and not sweat the small stuff. It is never easy, but it is necessary for my sanity and well-being.
Tigress Tips to Beat Stress and Unwind:
Talk to a friend. Having a shoulder to cry on truly is soul food. The three c’s, coffee, conversation and calm.
Read the Bible. This in particular is my favorite passage: Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Matthew 6:34
Journaling and writing down my thoughts is therapeutic as well as being a creative outlet
Meditating and breathing exercises practiced in Kundalini Yoga.
Volunteering and giving time to the needy of the community.
Hitting the gym. Hearing the iron clink is like music to my ears
In essence, focusing on the positive is what it is all about. I also try to think of what I enjoy in life and think beyond my stress. I try to focus on my passions, helping others, spending time with loved ones, writing or decorating my living space. Things I enjoy remove stress from being the focus. Life’s journey is too short to worry or become anxious about things that are beyond our control. Difficult situations will always come up, but how we deal with them can make all the difference.
