Running With Myself

In one of my previous posts entitled The Running/Walking Club I wrote of how much I   enjoyed running with a group of ladies from my job after work.  As the weather became colder, the days became shorter and ice and snow-covered the streets, our walks became far and few between. I really missed this group run, and had to turn to the lonely treadmill  when it was just too unbearable to run outdoors. Now that the weather is getting a little warmer and the snow has once again gone for the year (I hope), we have started talking about group running once again.

Of course, as with anything, there are pros and cons to running alone and in a group. I personally prefer to run in a group and find that there are no cons to a group run.  I love the light banter and conversation. It makes the run go by much faster. Also, I found if I was tempted to stop, someone in the group would be a motivator and encourage me to keep going until the next block. When I run alone, if I’m tired I just stop, period. There is nobody there to push me to the next block or the to the stop sign. So there is definitely that motivational factor when running with friends. When I run alone, I do tend to “talk to the voices in my head.”  What I mean by that is that I mentally work out my problems whilst running. Truth be told, after my run, my problems seem much smaller and easier to over come.  There is just something soothing about pounding the pavement and running in solitude while figuring it all out.

When running alone on the treadmill, it can get a little dull. Sometimes, I just don’t feel like doing it. The one thing that makes the monotony of the treadmill bearable and gets me through those hill drills and sprints is my music.  I can get lost in the music and not even realize that 30 minutes have passed. The other day, I chuckled when I was running to Billy Idol’s “Dancing with Myself” because I was running with myself. Thanks to Billy Idol’s classic hit, I made it through that final sprint and that last stretch of my run. Running with myself, sweating and loving it.

Thanks, Billy. You da' man!

What’s your preference. Running solo or with a group?
